Safety and environmental impact are two of the biggest concerns faced by any large-scale engineering or construction project. Both are rightfully important, the former because of the impact on your workers during the project and the latter because of the lasting impact to the job site area once the project is complete. Luckily, there is a solution that works to improve both conditions: high quality timber mats.
Mats like those provided by Spartan Mat serve to protect the ground underneath your heavy equipment by distributing the weight of the equipment over a larger area. The result is that the soil under, say, a crane will be much less compacted than it otherwise might be. This is good for your equipment, because it can move more freely over a more stable surface. It’s good for the local environment because there is less impact on plant and animal life and therefore less recovery time before the area surrounding your project is restored. Finally, it’s great for your long-term overhead because timber mats that are properly cared for can be re-used, and they help to protect your heavy machinery from mud and water damage that can accumulate over time.
Durability and Care
Since they are made out of natural wood, mats can rot and otherwise degrade over time. This can be prevented somewhat with a waterproof coating, but some basic care and maintenance can also help. The occasional pressure washing, regular sweeping, and inspection for damage will go a long way toward ensuring the longevity of your timber mats. Whether you intend to transport them with you to your next job site or you intend to sell them back to the supplier when you have finished, they are an investment that needs to be protected. When they are properly cared for, they retain their value better and last longer.
Compacted soil might seem like a minor concern, but it leads to larger issues in ways that are hard to foresee sometimes. When topsoil is compressed, it can become so hard that vegetation fails to take root in it, which can lead to much longer recovery times for both plant and animal life after your project. Additionally, while you work the compressed soil becomes less absorbent, which can lead to problems during heavy rains. As the water is absorbed, and it will eventually be, it can create a pool of standing mud that gradually deepens, increasing wear on vehicles and causing safety hazards. The proper use of timber mats, though will help to reduce these impacts, making rainwater drainage less of a problematic concern.
Alternate Uses and Resale
Between jobs, you can always use your mats for other purposes. Outdoor staging, temporary road building, and other similar tasks can make good use of your investment in-between regular construction and excavation jobs. Otherwise, most suppliers will also employ a buyback program to take them off your hands after your project is complete. These programs grade each mat to assign a value to it, which is part of the reason why care and cleaning can be so important. Remember, too, that mats can be made to any length, so regardless of the size of your job you can still gain the environmental and safety advantages that come with them.
